Dear Parents and student,

The Mercer Environmental Tourism Charter School staff would like to invite you to a planning session for the METCS students to determine their course work and project based learning goals for the 2008-2009 year. The meeting will be held in the Mercer School library on March 12, 2008 at 6:00pm. We feel it is important for parents as well as students to attend this meeting. We will give an overview of ideas for students to choose from in planning their schedules and independent studies. The concept of the Individualized Learning Plan will be introduced to the group so that students can begin to prepare their plan for approval from the METCS Governing Council.

Please bring your ideas about what areas of interest you would like to explore in the areas of tourism and the environment. After we have a general discussion about the METCS Charter School and possible opportunities for study, each family will meet with a METCS staff member to plan next year’s schedule and field experience.

We look forward to meeting with you and helping to design a rewarding experience in the Mercer Environmental Tourism Charter School

Dear Board Member,

We hope that you had a good meeting on February 26th, 2008 with CESA #12.

Enclosed please find a copy of the Mercer District Board policies that are waived from the charter school and some independent study ideas. We have scheduled a meeting on March 11, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in the history room at Mercer School. The agenda for this meeting is attached.

Please take time to read over the METCS By-Laws that were sent for the January 16th meeting and make comments to bring to the meeting. If you do not have your original copy, call me and I will send you a new copy. One important area of the draft that has to be completed is in Section Three dealing with terms of office for the members of the governing council. The council will revise and have the first reading at this meeting. There is an attached copy of the Mercer District Board policies that are waived for the METCS. Please look at these policies so that the governing council can decide how these waived policies will be changed for the METCS students. This will be the first reading of the policy changes for METCS students. The waived policies are listed below:

Mercer School Board Policy #322-Hours of Instruction

Mercer School Board Policy #345.5-Graduation Requirements

Mercer School Board Policy #346-Grading Systems

Mercer School Board Procedure #346.1P-Grading Procedure

Mercer School Board Policy #351-Independent Study

Mercer School Board Procedure #362-Procedures and Rules for using the Internet

The independent study ideas for students are from various sources and are for council members to look over. I think we have some interesting options that the students can begin to select and create their individual learning plans. If you have any more ideas please feel free to bring them to the meeting.
